As a born and raised Mississippi gal, I can tell you about food. I’m excited to write this foodie recommendation because Jackson, MS is full of entrepreneurs and small businesses so there are so many restaurants to write home about.
Penn’s Fish House
Penn’s is a staple seafood to-go establishment located in the metro Jackson, MS area. Their menu consists of fish, shrimp, fried pickles, chicken on the stick, poboy’s, hamburgers, etc. I love the fact that this establishment is probably one of the few restaurants (besides Captain D’s) that has fried catfish ready on demand (which is why it is a foodie recommendation 😏). In addition, there is a snack portion that you may opt to have if you’re not that hungry. Pictured below is the catfish snack portion, which consisted of 3 pieces of fish and fries. You may also choose between hushpuppies or fries.

Tuk Tuk Boom
This was a very random find in Highland Village. I didn’t think I would be recommending sushi from a Thai restaurant, but this place was AWESOME. Not to mention, the sushi was FRESH. Moreover, I feel as though this establishment is a GREAT foodie recommendation if you’re needing a break from the good ‘ole southern cooking.
I want to start off discussing the Brussel sprouts. If you can or can not tell already, I love Brussels! However, the way Tuk Tuk Boom prepared this dish was amazing. The Brussels were shaved which is a lot different from the normal way they are prepared. It was both a sweet and savory taste since the dish included cabbage, cilantro, and peanuts.
I arrived at Tuk Tuk during happy hour and thankfully I did because the pomegranate margarita was phenomenal! Not too sweet, or strong, but just RIGHT. However, I will say, it caught up with me within 30 minutes or so.
If you plan to visit this restaurant, visit Tuk Tuk Boom before arriving!
Cock of the Walk
Originating in Ridgeland,MS, I can tell you this is a favorite of ALL Mississippians. Cock of the Walk is a family style restaurant that has some of THE BEST CATFISH! If you’re dining with at least two people, I recommend the “Keelboat Special.” It comes with your choice of either catfish (please go with the catfish) or chicken. However, you can do 1/2 catfish 1/2 chicken. Either way, this special comes with fries and hushpuppies. You can also add collard greens, cornbread, coleslaw, or pickled onions for a little razzle dazzle. Don’t forget to order the fried pickles for an appetizer!
Cups Coffee
Cups is another MS staple and many locations can be found throughout the Jackson, MS area. This coffee shop is oh so good if you’re looking for something a little bit more magical than the chain coffee shops. If you go, try the Turtle or one of the blondies. Of course I made a few modifications because your girl has to maintain her figure.
Hopefully, you all enjoyed this Foodie Recommendation: Jackson, MS! Please use the information to plan a foodie itinerary.
